I keep seeing old fords. Maybe it’s time we change that “found on road dead” saying. Is this a Maverick? It was certainly loved by someone to keep it running and looking pretty good.

Wow, brown on orange brown. That car and some bell bottoms were someone’s world in 1978.

Fun fact: the 2-door Maverick makes for an epic dragstrip car. My friend had a turbocharged carbureted ‘70 with grabber graphics. That thing was an absolute missile when it was running.

Nope, although the tail lights are the same as the early Pinto’s.
the Maverick was still based on the ‘60s Falcon platform which the first two generations of the Mustang and Cougar also shared. in ‘74, the Mustang moved to its own downsized (Pinto-based) architecture as the Mustang II, while the Cougar got bigger and moved over to the Torino’s body-on-frame architecture.
Honestly, while the 2nd-gen (1971-73) Mustang did get too big and porky, I think it was a mistake to throw it out and do the Mustang II. The Maverick could have easily been re-designed into a credible new, lighter weight Mustang. As it was, the Mustang II added so much weight over the Pinto that the Maverick was only about 150 lbs heavier; and it was still about 300 lbs lighter than the ‘73 Mustang.
there’s no reason the ‘74 Mustang couldn’t have been based on this:

Nice I honestly forgot about the Maverick. I always liked the pinto badge. Maverick is kinda cool but “ an unbranded range animal; especially : a motherless calf” is kinda weird and the badge was a little weak too.

Nice I honestly forgot about the Maverick.
so did pretty much everybody. I remember it because my aunt had a pea green one when I was a kid. And when they got married, my uncle had an AMC Concord.

See, Ford? THAT’s a Maverick, not this . Please don’t bring the name back just to put it on the wrong car. See also: Mach 1.

There’s a late 50s white on black Crown Vic that’s been running around town. I should try to get a pic next time

My Mom’s second car was a purple Maverick sedan. It was passed on through her 5 younger siblings until it one day just collapsed into a pile of rust

I had a 73 Maverick Grabber back in high school. Four barrel 302 and (sadly) a C4 auto. It was actually a lot of fun. I wish I still had it!
